With a Heart Overflowing with Universal Love, We Can Live with Radiance
— lecture given by Master Ou, Wen Wei on his birthday party in 2006
You are very welcome to be here at my birthday party. Please accept my warmest greetings. I am more than happy to share the pleasure of my birthday with all my students.
Recently I wrote a statement (in calligraphy) as a New Year’s gift especially for my Pan Gu Shengong students. The statement is: “With a Heart Overflowing with Universal Love, We Can Live with Radiance!”
I wish that all my Pan Gu Shengong students become healthier in the new year; I wish that they live happier from now on.
I understand that everyone seeks health and happiness; however, how to achieve this goal? The statement I mentioned above offers you the method.
You can absorb the healing energy from the universe by practicing the Pan Gu Shengong I created; the energy you absorb can improve your life force and immunity. In this way, you gain the basic possibility of being truly healthy.
I haven’t been sick for the last thirty-one years; neither have I needed to take any medication. For the past thirty-one years, I have undergone various difficulties and hardships, have worked in many different careers, and have been to many places all of which might be much more than any of you have experienced. Why am I still able to keep such good health when experiencing so many difficulties and hardships? One of the most important reasons is that I follow Pan Gu’s requirement to maintain a heart overflowing with universal love toward everyone in this world; I have learned to truly respect everyone. Therefore, I have reached the highest level of kindness and universal love. When a person has such qualities, for sure he or she can absorb various kinds of beneficial energy continually; as a result, his/her health is guaranteed.
This has been my experience and understanding as a result of my experience. I’m more than happy to share them with you. If you want to gain true health, you should learn universal love, holding a portion of true kindness and true love in your heart at every moment, and learn to be calm, tolerant, and generous in dealing with people and issues. This is what the first half of the statement—“With a Heart Overflowing with Universal Love”—implies.
Why are the benefits earned by different Pan Gu Shengong practitioners so varied? It is not because of the different amount of times they practice; it’s caused by the amount of true love one has in one’s heart, which is the most important factor. If you are really willing to practice with universal love, you will be able to treat people kindly, gently, and calmly, and you will be willing to overcome your shortcomings continually.
We all inevitably have many shortcomings. What is the biggest shortcoming a person has? It is being too concerned about one’s own feelings. We always tend to put ourselves and our own feelings in first place no matter whom we are dealing with, relatives or friends. Deep down in our hearts, we are self-centered. Therefore, you will feel very happy when someone says something good to you; however, you will feel unhappy or even lose your temper when the conversation does not go according to your will. It is the biggest shortcoming we, today’s human beings, have; and it’s also the most frequent mistake we make.
The reason that Pan Gu advocates the statements “Take kindness and benevolence as basis; take frankness and friendliness to heart” is to encourage us to reform ourselves to be better individuals. First of all, learn to care for the relatives and other people around you. Then learn to be able to treat their happiness as your own happiness. In order to make them happier, you should try your best to treat them in a gentle manner, try to do more things for them, and try to let them experience your concern for them. For instance, you might try to make the food more delicious in order to make people around you happier when eating.
These are very trifling details in our daily lives. But can we accomplish them? I believe every one of us can. The pity is, however, that not many of us can accomplish them well! Why? It’s because the love and kindness in your heart haven’t reached to a high enough level; it’s because you still fuss too much about your own feelings.
What is another big shortcoming we have? Being lazy and seeking ease and comfort; taking the opportunity to do as little as possible, to let others do the job but enjoy the fruits ourselves. Please ask yourself: do you have such greed and laziness deep down in your heart? Many people always hope that as soon as they get home their meals will be ready for them and they can eat as much as they want; after eating, they can enjoy some music or reading without having to clean up. This kind of thinking is very common. I believe, however, that if your heart overflows with a high-level quality of love and kindness, you won’t behave in this way. You will try your best to make better meals simply in order to let your relatives enjoy them more. I am such a person. In a moment, you will agree with me when you taste my food!
The Americans who have tried my Chinese cuisine now find the cooking in Chinese restaurants in America is less tasty. Paul and Robert have had such an experience. You may ask them if it’s true. [Paul and Robert both said yes.]
Some people have asked me: “From whom or where did you learn your cooking skills?” At such moments, I have felt it difficult to answer them in an easy way. Why is this?
Almost everyone believes that if you want to learn a skill or gain knowledge, you have to learn from experts, or take a seminar, or enroll in a school. Based on my life experience, however, that is not the case. What is the most important element in one’s study? It is your heart: to learn from the kindness portion of your heart, to bring your kindness into play.
Every one of us possesses a most beautiful thing, which is the kindness portion of our hearts. It is regretful, however, that many people do not know how to bring their kindness into play, but instead bring the ugly portion of their heart into play. In other words, they just give full play to demeaning behavior by being self-concerned, greedy, and lazy. As a result, many of our potential talents fail to get a chance to develop. If we learn true kindness and love, then our potential abilities can be uncovered, developed, and brought into full play. In this way, your overall abilities can improve a lot—this is what I have learned from my experience.
I did not learn from any particular person how to cook. I can cook as well as I can because I always wanted to enable my daughter and wife to eat better and become happier. It is the same when I cook for my Pan Gu Shengong students. Because I have this goal, I can cook seriously and with love throughout the entire process.
No matter what you do, as long as you take it seriously, you can do it well with fewer mistakes; however, people usually fail to reach a high level of seriousness. For example, many people are not sure how much salt and sugar should be used when they cook. It’s because they never take cooking seriously and fail to accumulate experience little by little; some people are even thinking about other matters when they cook. How can you make delicious food with such an attitude?
Since I have a high quality of love and kindness in my heart, I can always be calm no matter what I confront. Once you are calm, you can consider situations with a serious attitude and reduce the possibility of making mistakes. Therefore, if you are able to have a heart overflowing with universal love, you can not only have better health but also have higher abilities in all aspects; as a result, you can work more efficiently and earn more income.
Even though I don’t recommend living for money, money is the basic requisite for living in this world; therefore, we need to work hard. My recommendation is to use kind means to make more money but not to care about money. Once you have a certain amount of income, and also are good at spending your money in the right way, then your quality of life will progress a lot.
I always mention to my students: we should work hard to improve our quality of life. In order to achieve that, however, the first problem is not handling money but the quality of your heart and soul. Only when you learn to be kind and benevolent, will you do things for and share things with your relatives and friends (for example, make delicious food for them); as a result, your quality of life will improve.
If two persons have the same amount of money but with a different quality of their heart and soul, the quality of their lives for sure will be different. Many people in this world do not know how to enjoy their lives, including some of those who are very rich. Some people believe it’s very enjoyable to be able to buy whatever they want to eat. I don’t think so.
The one who wants to know the way to really enjoy life should know how to upgrade the materials he or she already has and know how to have a right attitude toward enjoyment. Take eating as an example. We should have a calm and happy mind in tasting the food. Only when you can do that, can you be seen as a person who knows to enjoy food. We must understand this: only when we eat our food with a calm and happy mind, do our physiological functions perform in the optimal way; the food can then be digested and absorbed in the most efficient way; as a result, our body benefits the most. Some people, however, like to read papers while they are eating a hamburger at lunch. On the surface they seem to be hardworking, but they actually do not know the way to enjoy life and take care of themselves.
Therefore, today I put emphasis on explaining the way to achieve true health and to improve the quality of one’s life. If you grasp what I said, I believe you will live in a more meaningful way and with more happiness.
Once again, I wish everybody:
With a Heart Overflowing with Universal Love, We Can Live with Radiance!
