My Humble Reflection on Practicing the Non-Moving Form of Pangu Shengong — By Youguang Zhu
After I read Master Ou’s book “The Path of Life” in 1991, I developed a strong interest in learning Pangu Shengong. Soon after I took the Moving Form class and started practicing it daily, several of my illnesses disappeared very effectively, so I felt in love with Pangu Shengong.
I soon took the Non-Moving Form class as well. I read many times the transcript of the lectures on the Non-Moving Form given by Master Ou, and I took to heart several key points of the teaching. I would like to list them below:
1. The Non-Moving Form mainly focuses on cultivating the soul (including spirituality) with the cultivation of the physical body as a secondary purpose.
2. The Non-Moving Form has a unique and amazing feature that it can become a tool for us to save our own life in the most difficult, painful, or critical time.
3. The Non-Moving Form can improve sleeping quality. It will help individuals falling asleep easier. Even when one cannot fall asleep, doing a Non-Moving Form practice is equal to taking a good nap.
I determined to practice the Non-Moving Form every day. But it was harder than I thought. At first, it took me more than 40 minutes to finish one Non-Moving Form, and I felt sore with some muscles in certain parts of my body afterwards. I was puzzled. So, I paid more attention to how did I do the form. I noticed that I tightened my whole body too much when trying to rotate the sun and the moon in my eyes. Therefore, I reminded myself to be relaxed when doing the Non-Moving Form and use a gentle intention to have the sun and moon spin. Practicing in this way for a period, the situation improved. I felt that the effect emerged, my mind became more active, my memory began to get better, and later some of chronic physical issues, such as nasal congestion, were gone as well.
At that time, my work was rather stressful, and I often worked night shifts, so it was inevitable that I would sometimes lose sleep, I wanted to use the Non-Moving Form to solve my sleep problems. Like most people, I was afraid that my inability to sleep would affect my life, study, and work the next day, and I was often nervous and irritable, and my body was restless. Even when I practiced the Non-Moving Form, my mind was still restless and impatient, and the more I did so, the more irritable and nervous I became, the more I could not sleep. For a while, I was troubled and depressed by this. I asked myself, “Is it impossible to reverse this situation? I didn’t want to take sleeping pills. What should I do?” At times like this, the messages Master Ou taught in the Non-Moving Form class always resurfaced in my mind: “The Non-Moving Form mainly focuses on the cultivation of the heart-and-soul (including spirituality).”
“Do I truly understand this sentence?” I asked myself, “What is Heart-and-soul cultivation?” I decided to force myself to recite the phrase “Cultivating the heart-and-soul” constantly in my mind regardless of whether or not I have truly understood it. I need to imprint this concept into my consciousness and subconsciousness, making myself aware of the needs of heart-and-soul cultivation, and developing a longing for the soul cultivating.
It worked! I began to be able to reflect on my emotions. “Am I really doing the Non-Moving Form practice if I am so impatient? I should learn to put aside my chaotic thoughts, let my mind quiet down, calm down. If I continue to be agitated, I will only hurt myself, aggravate the negative tendencies of my emotions, and in a vicious circle I will also continue to magnify the negative effects, and also hurt my body at the same time. “Thinking of this, I think I should adjust my emotions, let my mind quiet down, relax my body, slowly and quietly practice the Non-Moving Form, gently and naturally turn the sun and the moon, inhale and exhale deeply, evenly, finely and long, let the mind and behavior enter such a state to dominate sleep. By doing the Non-Moving form in this way, I dramatically improved my sleeping quality. Sometimes I would fall into the half sleep state immediately, sometimes full sleep. Sometimes, even if I was not able to fall asleep, I managed to control my emotions and not to rush, feeling at ease of spending a whole night to finish one or two Non-Moving Form practice. As a result, I woke up the next day with strong vitality. In this way, I began to have better understanding on the heart-and-soul cultivation of the Non-Moving Form.
The situation became better and better as time went by, and I gradually formed a habit to start practicing the Non-Moving Form as soon as I got into bed. Usually, I felt asleep before I finished one Non-Moving form, sometimes before even finishing one part of it. Occasionally when I still had trouble falling asleep, I would keep practicing the Non-Moving Form, which made me very energetic the next day. I don’t worry about insomnia anymore.
I feel blessed that I have learned the Non-Moving Form. There are many difficult problems in life, and insomnia is one of them, and the Non-Moving Form is a very good tool to solve them. More importantly, by solving insomnia through doing the Non-Moving Form practice, I have learned to regulate my emotions, learned to deal with problems quietly and optimistically; I have been able to face difficulties with more calm, patience, and more rational awareness. In the face of physical pain, I will not simply go to seek medical advice, but through looking into my soul and my human nature to find the root cause. Sometimes this approach might take a longer time for solving a single issue. However, once I found the root cause and advanced to a higher level of existence, many other issues and confusion in life will be resolved as well.
My potential abilities were developed with the Non-Moving Form practice. For example, I developed the ability to detect other people’s illnesses with the both body-sensing ability and the visual viewing ability. I also developed some interesting abilities soon after I started practicing the Non-Moving Form. For example, I was able to communicate with the statues of gods and goddesses in the temples as soon as I walked in. Some people might think that the ability of receiving information beyond the normal material or physical ways is a major part of spirituality. I intended to think that way as well in the past. But with more study with Master Ou’s teaching, I gradually realize that without a high-quality heart-and-soul, we cannot process and distinguish the information we receive from different channels and sources. Therefore, the essential part of the spirituality should be to elevate one’s morality. Therefore, I will continue to study and practice all forms of Pangu Shengong.
